“I interviewed Ant and Dec!”
For TV’s Scarlette Douglas, a switch from stage to screen has led her to all corners of the world
For TV presenter and former musical theatre performer Scarlette Douglas, her showbiz career has led to travel experiences worldwide. She’s performed alongside Michael Jackson in Abu Dhabi, helped people find homes across the globe, and last month saw the launch of her new prime time TV travel show, Last Minute Holiday Secrets.
“Musical theatre was the first job to take me all over the world,” says Scarlette. “My biggest tour was with Michael Jackson – I took part in his UK and European tours, including performances in Abu Dhabi and Singapore. I was performing at every concert. Singapore was amazing. We were performing in a theatre in a massive shopping centre and used to go for a swim in the hotel’s huge infinity pool before the show.
“Moving into presenting A Place in the Sun was a big change; it happened almost overnight. I was in the cast of the X Factor’s West End musical. We were supposed to do a year, but it closed after two months. Luckily I got the opportunity to join the Ant & Dec Tour, and I did a little presenting during the tour. I interviewed Ant and Dec and they gave me a lot of advice.
“My brother is a property developer and he encouraged me to start on TV. When the X Factor job ended, I was getting a property ready to sell on and had expected a year’s wages to pay the bills. I decided to use that property expertise to get into presenting, and A Place in the Sun was looking for new people to join the show. My agent sent them a show reel and 10 days later I went for a screen test and got the job.
“With A Place in the Sun I’ve been to lots of places in the Caribbean and travelled to Portugal, Spain, France, Sicily and Madeira. I was set to go to Thailand, then it was discovered that my fellow presenter Jonnie Irwin was in India so it was easier for him to go than for me to fly from the UK. I was so envious!
“I’ve got a new show on prime time Channel 4, called Last Minute Holiday Secrets. It’s a one off but hopefully it will become a series. We went to Tenerife to film two couples: one had booked in advance and had everything organised. The other couple did everything in a hurry at the last minute. It was very insightful!”
And another thing…
“Aruba, an island in the Caribbean, is definitely my favourite place to holiday,” says Scarlette. “It’s the most amazing place, and at night I can lie on a sun lounger and watch the flamingos…”
