Explore Worcester’s Civil War history and discover the battle that changed the course of English history. 

This year marks 375 years since the Battle of Worcester – the dramatic final clash of the English Civil Wars in 1651 that left England without a monarch and changed the course of the country's history. Groups are invited to discover more about this pivotal moment at The Commandery, one of Worcester’s oldest and most beautiful buildings, which played a central role as the Royalist Headquarters during the Battle of Worcester.  Throughout the year it is offering a 10% discount on admission for group visits of 10 people or more. In addition, you can book a one-hour tour led by a member of the knowledgeable team for £85 per group.

During this special anniversary year, The Commandery, is offering an exclusive Civil War group tour ‘The Commandery’s Civil War: the Battle of Worcester unfolded’. This one-hour guided tour will take you back to the dramatic final chapter of the English Civil War as you discover how the decisive clash of 1651 unfolded across the city whilst you stand within the headquarters used by the Royalist forces:

• Come face to face with the haunting death mask of Oliver Cromwell

• Find out who was buried under The Commandery’s floorboards

• Hear the gripping stories of courage, defeat, and escape that shaped the nation’s future.
• Take in views toward Fort Royal Hill, where crucial fighting raged during the Battle of Worcester.

For groups visiting without a guided tour, you can still enjoy a special free 10-minute introductory talk focusing on the building’s pivotal role in the Battle of Worcester. Expert guides will set the scene for how this remarkable building became the Royalist headquarters in 1651 and reveal why The Commandery remains one of Worcester’s most important historic sites.

The Commandery is situated in the heart of Worcester, alongside the picturesque Worcester and Birmingham canal. Just a few minutes’ walk from the shops and restaurants of the city centre, with views of Worcester Cathedral and Fort Royal Hill, it is a fantastic location to start a day or weekend visit in this historic city.

Little Al’s Kitchen at The Commandery offers a range of tasty treats and refreshments from coffee and cake to seasonal lunch bites. You are also welcome to bring your own picnics and make the most of our beautiful gardens - we’ll even provide the blankets!
