Set in parkland along the River Tees, Preston Park Museum has reopened following a multi-million-pound transformation, marking a new chapter for one of the Tees Valley’s most treasured heritage attractions.

At the centre of this transformation is The Spence Building, a new exhibition space that blends contemporary architecture with the museum’s historic charm. This state-of-the-art facility now hosts prestigious national touring exhibitions, bringing world class art and artefacts to the region. It also allows for more of the museum’s own remarkable collection to be displayed.

Visitors can still enjoy the museum’s much-loved Victorian Street, a beautifully recreated 1895 street with traditional shops, cobbled paths and period details. Another highlight is The Hall, the elegant former home of the Ropner family. This grand building offers a glimpse into the lives of one of Stockton’s most influential families, while also exploring the wider social and industrial history of the region.

Outdoors, the Walled Garden (open seasonally) offers a tranquil retreat filled with vibrant flowers, fruit trees, and vegetables. Beyond the garden, woodland trails and riverside walks provide picturesque routes along the River Tees, while the historic route of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, now a woodland path, honours the region’s pioneering role in railway history.

The museum’s transformation also includes a host of new features that make it ideal for group visits. A bright glazed entrance creates a seamless and welcoming arrival, the new gift shop offers a curated selection of unique homeware, locally inspired souvenirs and gifts. For refreshments, the new The Spence Café offers indoor seating and a terrace overlooking the orchard. Accessibility has also been improved, with Changing Places toilets and upgraded facilities ensuring comfort for all visitors. For groups, there is free coach parking and complimentary tea or coffee for the driver.
