It’s been the home of two Prime Ministers, the weekend country getaway of many a royal – and now Brocket Hall is open to guests in search of a countryside escape like no other

Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire is a fascinating building that’s been home to two Prime Ministers and the holiday pad of many a royal guest over the centuries. And what makes it even more special is the fact that today, corporate groups, wedding parties, Christmas soirée-goers and others can hire the entire house for a day, a weekend or more, and treat it as though it’s their own – complete with a team of butlers to cater for their every whim. They can stay in the 30 en-suite bedrooms, have full use of the event and meeting spaces, and generally live like a royal. Of course, all this doesn’t come cheap (from £5,000 a day), but as venues go it can’t be beaten.

If a more modest night’s stay is on the cards, the Brocket Hall estate is also home to Melbourne Lodge, an elegant Georgian coach house conversion overlooking the Hall. The Group Travel World magazine team enjoyed The Auberge Experience, which for a tad under £500 per couple offers a night’s stay in the Melbourne Lodge, a seven-course taster menu, with wine, in the Brocket estate’s fabulous, five-star Auberge du Lac restaurant, champagne and chocolates in your room and breakfast the next morning. On selected days of the year Brocket Hall is also open for its Heritage Afternoon Tea events.

The Brocket estate is perhaps best known today for its two 18-hole championship golf courses, and overnight golfing breaks (again staying at the plush Melbourne Lodge) are also available. From £195 per person, these include a night’s stay, 18 holes of golf and breakfast.
